Bienvenue... Welcome to the Languages section of the Curriculum.
At Sutton Green, every child in Key Stage 2 has the opportunity to study French as our chosen foreign language in accordance with the guidelines set out by the National Languages strategy.
Some year groups have also been exposed to an additional language when studying a particular topic prior to our new Cornerstones Curriculum. For example, as part of their Topic on Spain, Year 5 spent a term learning Spanish and when studying China, Year 6 learnt the basics in Mandarin.
It is widely believed that the early acquisition of a foreign language facilitates the learning of other foreign languages later in life and as such we are providing our pupils with the tools and skills required to do this.
Pupils are taught to understand and respond to spoken and written French; speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity; write in French at varying length (for different purposes and audiences using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt); and discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in French.
Please explore the following pages and our Curriculum Map to see what the children are currently learning in their year groups.
Our last whole school Topic in the Summer Term was 'Water' and in French, KS2 focused their learning around the seaside, 'Au bord de la mer'.
Year 3 focused on the spoken language asking questions 'Combien de ....?' and listening to their partners responses 'Il y a ....'
Year 4 wrote simple phrases they could see 'au bord de la mer' checking that adjectives agreed with their nouns.
Year 5 studied a seaside image and wrote sentences describing the position of items on the beach.
Year 6 looked at things people do when at the beach and wrote sentences focusing on the different verb endings depending on the subject of the sentence.
